The city of Helsinki has a target to achieve carbon neutrality in 2035. The objective of this project was to use energy simulations to study and compare multiple different energy production alternatives for new Malmi airport area in Helsinki and determine which of them would be suitable for achieving low carbon emissions cost efficiently. Totally 284 energy system variations were simulated. Results show that the carbon emissions from energy production can be cost effectively decreased compared to local business as usual solution. Ground source heat pump-based systems proved to be one of the most effective solutions.
