Remote bridge inspection using optical methods
Abstract
Routine bridge inspections usually consist of visual observations. These inspections are time-consuming and subjective. There is a need to identify new inspection techniques for infrastructure that reduce traffic disturbance, and improve the efficiency and reliability of the acquired data. This study compared the performance of three different imaging technologies for the three-dimensional (3D) geometric modelling of existing structures: terrestrial laser scanning, close-range photogrammetry, and infrared scanning. Each technology was used to assess six existing concrete railway bridges. The results suggest that all methods investigated can be used to create 3D models, however, with different level of completeness. Remote bridge inspection using optical methods

Workflow for Off-Site Bridge Inspection Using Automatic Damage Detection-Case Study of the Pahtajokk Bridge
Mirzazade, Ali; Popescu, Cosmin; Blanksvärd, Thomas; Täljsten, Björn (Peer reviewed; Journal article, 2021)For the inspection of structures, particularly bridges, it is becoming common to replace humans with autonomous systems that use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). In this paper, a framework for autonomous bridge inspection ... -
A micromechanical model of fiber bridging including effects of large deflections of the bridging fibers
Grytten, Frode; Sørensen, Bent Fruergaard; Goutianos, Stergios; Joki, Reidar Kvale; Jørgensen, Jens Kjær (Peer reviewed; Journal article, 2021)A micromechanical model of cross-over fiber bridging is developed for the prediction of macroscopic mixed-mode bridging laws (traction-separation laws). The model is based on non-linear beam theory and takes into account ... -
A multi-level strategy for successively improved structural analysis of existing concrete bridges:examination using a prestressed concrete bridge tested to failure
Bagge, Niklas; Plos, Mario; Popescu, Cosmin (Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2018)This paper describes a multi-level strategy with increased complexity through four levels of structural analysis of concrete bridges. The concept was developed to provide a procedure that supports enhanced assessments with ...
